Our initial review of fund investments will consider the espoused strategy of a fund and whether we feel such strategy has merit in the current macro-environment. We go on to identify further issues including track record, return attribution, management, geographic focus, historical returns, and in particular the background of the fund's partners, before reviewing the investment process and performing a more profound due diligence. We are very selective in choosing top quality, complementary managers.
The screening process for direct investments is similar to that of funds. Globally, we have specialist research teams with specific industry backgrounds to screen deals, visit management and investigate the sites of companies in which we have a serious interest. All of our direct deals are subject to an investment committee memorandum: a comprehensive outline of the company, the strategy, the investment thesis, and the risks inherent in that thesis.
We proceed to an initial review on between 20% and 30% of the proposals that are submitted to us, finally investing in less than five percent.
